Plesiosaurs first appeared in the latest Triassic Period, possibly in the Rhaetian stage, about 203 million years ago.

They became especially common during the Jurassic Period, thriving until their disappearance at the end of the Cretaceous Period, about 66 million years ago? They had a worldwide oceanic distribution, and some species at least partly inhabited freshwater environments. While they were not dinosaurs, plesiosaurs are often grouped with them as "prehistoric reptiles" because they

existed during the same time periods (Jurassic and Cretaceous).

Mahi Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) Middle Cretaceous (approximately 95 million years ago)

Potential fossils closely resembling the modern dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) exist, including a notable specimen from the Middle Cretaceous (approximately 95 million years ago) found in Lebanon, which shows a similar dorsal fin and high-domed head structure.
